A team’s Mission speaks to its purpose and goals. Why does the team exist? How does it define success? What are its goals and the strategies and plans it will use to achieve those goals? While some teams have crafted a Mission statement, few are based on a robust discussion of team Context first – the foundation of any good team Mission.
Without alignment on the shared assumptions among team members about their key stakeholders, external factors, and organizational dynamics the team may be left with a misguided, unrealistic, or incomplete Mission. Or worse, a Mission that is more of a feel-good aspirational statement based on idealism rather than grounded in reality.
A good Mission Statement should be directional and informative and serve as a catalyst in energizing the team towards its future goals and objectives. Specifically, it should honor the past, be realistic about the present and provide hope for the future.
With a well-defined Mission, teams can lay the groundwork for greater cohesion, direction, and a collective sense of purpose. From this, they are better able to navigate challenges with resilience, leverage resources efficiently, and ensure they have the right talent. Creating or improving your team Mission can be done by crafting a Mission Statement, Team Scorecard, or through developing Team Action Plans.
