A Look at How High Performing Teams Think About Resources

What kind of resources are required for a team to achieve and maintain top performance? The best way to answer this question is to refer to the team Mission or Purpose. As with team talent, it’s best to look at where the team is heading and what is required to get there as efficiently and effectively as possible.

High-performing teams look at the same kinds of resources that other teams might, including budget, data, equipment, and facilities/office space. For most teams, these are table stakes once you have the right talent in place. But high performing teams often differ from others in a few important ways when it comes to resources.

  • They ensure their purpose and goals are crystal clear. This allows them to understand exactly what kind of talent they need in what amounts as well as what resources will be required and when.  Without a clear purpose many teams can also end up squandering resources and/or misallocating them. Thus, resource planning and management start well before the budgeting planning process.

  • They fully utilize their resources. Many teams have resources that they don’t fully understand or utilize. Data is a good example. A lot of teams have access to data that they don’t leverage in the planning and decision-making process. High performing teams, however, make the best possible use of their available resources – including data.

  • Authority is a resource. High performing teams understand that their ability to make important decisions independently is a valuable resource. Teams that need to defer every decision to the leader or are hamstrung by too much policy, process or procedure lack the resource of authority. This can not only lead to inefficiency, but also contribute to a kind of “learned helplessness” whereby the team does nothing without significant checking, approval and sign-off.
