Transforming Broken Teams

Even “broken” teams can achieve high performance. Consider the story of Cheryl - promoted for her technical prowess into a leadership role. She loved the team and the company, but within a few months, her leadership style — micromanaging, ignoring conflicts, and lacking vision — lead to the team start struggling. Cheryl’s boss seems unconcerned saying that these issues are a normal part of being a new leader.

Nearly a year in, the team’s performance continues to decline, and turnover begins. Several key players leave, citing micromanagement and an overall lack of vision. These departures give Cheryl pause - something was very wrong. She needed do something differently.

Broken teams can take many forms: Unproductive conflict, toxic members, overwork, or micromanagement. Without intervention, they become dysfunctional, hurting morale, performance, and ultimately retention. Many leaders are never told or trained in how to build effective teams. So, they do their best to create team cohesion and collaboration by trying any number of teambuilding exercises.

Not surprisingly, these approaches rarely work. They fail to identify the real reasons for poor team dynamics and performance, and they wrongly assume that if everyone gets to know their team members a bit better, they’ll perform better.

Instead, why not take a more consistent, science-based approach to improving team effectiveness? Using the Team Assessment Survey (TAS), teams can pinpoint the key issues affecting performance and quickly create a roadmap to greater effectiveness and results. In this way, even broken teams can thrive and become high performing.

With 43% of employees leaving due to poor team experiences, the problem may seem obvious to some. Yet, 80% of leaders think they manage highly effective teams. Sadly, only 20% of their team members agree. This gap drives a lack of action, lowering engagement, performance, and retention. If you lead a team and you're not seeing the results you want, it’s time to take a closer look.
