High-Performing Teams: Why Context Matters

In the pursuit of peak performance, organizations often struggle with a perennial challenge: Assembling a group of talented individuals doesn’t always equate to a high-functioning team. Despite possessing the requisite intelligence (IQ) and emotional intelligence (EQ), teams often fall short of achieving their objectives, leaving leaders to wonder what they are missing.

Enter Team Quotient (TQ), the elusive yet essential factor behind successful teams. Understanding TQ involves understanding what makes for a high-performing team. Over the next few weeks, we’ll outline the eight-factor framework designed to propel teams towards peak performance and results. Today, we’ll start with Context.

Context serves as the foundation of all high-performing teams. It speaks to the shared assumptions among team members about their operating environment. Ensuring alignment on key stakeholders, external factors, and organizational dynamics lays the groundwork for effective collaboration. It may sound straightforward, but how aligned is your team on its key stakeholders and influencers? What assumptions and predictions do they share about the future? Do they agree on the political and economic realities they are facing? And do they all know what challenges they are facing today and potentially into the future? Without a shared understanding and alignment on such critical topics, the team may be left with a misguided, unrealistic, or incomplete Mission.

Getting your team aligned on Context doesn’t have to be difficult. Using a SWOT Analysis or Context Assessment Exercise are two good ways of doing this. You can contact us for a free copy of our Context Assessment Exercise or free SWOT analysis handout.
