A Closer Look at Team Effectiveness Models

A client recently asked the question, so I thought I’d share how our approach is different from other team effectiveness models on the market today.

  • Research & Data-Based: Unlike models such as Lencioni's, our 8-element model - developed in collaboration with Robert Hogan of Hogan Assessments - is rooted in research and validated on over 3500 teams worldwide.

  • Benchmarked: Our assessment compares teams against over 1500 worldwide counterparts, providing real-world benchmarks for team performance. Most other team models lack any comparison data.

  • High-Performance Specific: While many models like the Tuckman, GRPI and Salas et al. Models are more general in nature, ours is tailored to facilitate high performing teams, addressing the specific elements crucial for optimal team results.

  • Tested Interventions: We offer practical tools and interventions targeting specific team needs, compared to more theoretical or academic approaches to team effectiveness like the Robbins & Judge or Hackman Models.

  • Versatility: Unlike some models like the Lencioni, GRPI or Salas et al. Model, our approach is applicable across various team types, from dysfunctional to newly formed, matrixed, and virtual, ensuring applicability across a broad range of contexts.

  • Truly Team-Based: Unlike individual-focused assessments like the MBTI, Insights or DISC, ours evaluates team dynamics and structures, recognizing the important collective nature of team performance.

  • Adaptive: In contrast to some models like the Google Model, we offer much more nuanced insights beyond singular factors like psychological safety or diversity.

  • Easy to Use & Understand: Our straightforward assessment can be quickly analyzed and includes an overall Team Quotient (TQ) score, element-specific results, and a team vs group analysis which helps to provide a robust understanding of team performance. Other high-performance models like the T7 can be cumbersome to administer and difficult to analyze.

  • Trust: Like Lencioni, we agree trust is important to team effectiveness. However, unlike Lencioni we emphasize professional trust over personal trust, viewing it as an outcome of demonstrated competence, benevolence, and integrity among team members rather than an input based on team member vulnerability.

We’re on a mission to help leaders create great teams that get great results. Want to learn more about high performing teams?
